Hotel Phillips' Artist in Residence
The Arts are a major influence on the livelihood of any city but downtown Kansas City has an especially lively arts community. Being located just blocks from the Crossroads Arts District and amid new and historic performance venues, the hotel is in the epicenter of local creativity; Hotel Phillips embraces and supports those people who are building Kansas City's reputation as one of the most brilliant stars on the Arts horizon.
With that in mind, Trey Bryan is our first Artist in Residence. Trey received a BFA in drawing and painting from Ringling College of Art and Design in 2009. Shortly after graduating he moved to Kansas City where he began an apprenticeship with Mark English, an American illustrator and painter. After spending many hours painting nature, Trey would sit in many of the city's cafes and draw the people enjoying dinner, drinks and conversation. He enjoyed drawing so much that he started to compile his journal drawings and has published several books. Many of his illustrations are highlighted with handwritten observations and the thoughts they provoke. You can also find several of his large scale paintings hanging in the hotel and in 12 Baltimore.
General Manager Dan Bergmann states, "We feel that Kansas City has such a vibrant arts community that we want to support in many ways through the Hotel. We have jazz artists performing every weekend and enjoy long-standing relationships with many other local arts programs and now having Trey join us has added the visual arts component. We are extremely excited for our guests and Kansas City to see his work!"
Trey is currently a freelance illustrator and Hotel Phillips' Artist in Residence. Hotel Phillips is the only hotel in Kansas City to have a program of this type: an artist who is creating images that capture the spirit of our guests, historic Art Deco architecture and day to day activities. You'll find him in 12 Baltimore, at our sponsored events, sitting in the Lobby and Mezzanine; quietly capturing the moment. And who knows? You may be his next subject!
Trey's latest book Drawings of KC is available for sale at the front desk of the hotel.
